The Future of Work by Thomas Malone

In analyzing our obsession with hierarchy, I used information from The Future of Work by Thomas Malone:

  1. the description of the passage from hunter-gatherer to farmer appears on page 18, which contains multiple references to various sources.
  2. the idea that larger (and more centralized) organizations provide military and economic advantages is described on pages 20 and 21, again with multiple sources to back up the examples provided.

But really, the whole chapter 2 is a rather interesting account on the history of hierarchy (social, political and managerial.)

I don’t agree with Mr. Malone that falling communication costs is the principle reason for the rise of hierarchies, which is why I propose my five factors.
